If you are a pet owner I'm sure you are aware of the current pet food recall.
I really hope you and your pet have not been affected by this.

This website started out to provide pet owners with some information and recipes for healthy cat and dog treats, but in the current circumstances, it has changed focus to provide what I hope may be life-saving information instead.

I have replaced the usual home page of cat and dog treats with this page
for the duration of the recall.
I'll keep this page as up-to-date as I can.
And I'll also add any recommendations for safe pet food as I become aware of it

Under the current circumstances I strongly recommend you consider preparing your pet's food yourself , and keep yourself up-to-date with the latest news.

For the long term, I suggest you do some research into what your pet is actually eating and you may very well wish to change brands. In fact, I think we should use this as a wake up call to examine our own diets as well, and perhaps start questioning what we are all led to believe is "safe".

If you think your pet has been poisoned contact your vet or the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center at one of the numbers below:

1-900-443-0000 ($45.00 per case, charge is billed directly to caller's phone)

1-888-426-4435 ($45.00 per case, credit card only)

Follow-up calls can be made for no additional charge by dialing 888-299-2973

If your pet has been affected by the recalled pet foods and you wish to report the incident
you should contact the FDA, by going to the FDA Web site

Doing the following will help your vet to diagnose your pet:

  • Keep samples of the suspected food for analysis

  • Keep Product Documentation:
       - Keep all packaging and purchase receipts
       - Identify manufacturing date codes or production lot numbers

  • Document Product Consumption:
       - Dates and quantitied fed
       - How the food was tolerated
       - Time of onset of symptoms
       - Detailed dietary history (all products fed and feeding methods)

Although the exact cause for the recall is not currently known, pets that have become ill after consuming the recalled products have shown signs of acute kidney failure.

Signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, changes in water consumption and changes in urination. If your pet exhibits these signs you should take your pet to your vet. Note that there can be a wide variety of reasons a pet might exhibit these symptoms, so it may not be due to consuming a recalled product, but in the current circumstances it would be wise to have it checked out.

  • "People" Foods That Are Toxic To Cats and Dogs

If you decide to give your pet some "people" food while you're evaluating what to do long term keep in mind that the following are toxic:

Onions, Garlic, & Related Root Vegetables:
Onions contain a substance (N-propyl disulphide) which destroys red blood cells in the cat, causing a form of anemia called Heinz body anemia. Garlic contains a similar substance in a lesser amount.

    Tomatoes, Green (raw) Potatoes:
These foods are members of the Solanaceae family of plants, which includes the Deadly Nightshade, and contain a bitter, poisonous alkaloid called Glycoalkaloid Solanine, which can cause violent lower gastrointestinal symptoms. The Feline Future web site offers a rare description of a cat which was close to death from ingesting just one cherry tomato.

    Chocolate:
It's becoming more widely known that chocolate is very toxic to both cats and dogs. Theobromine is the offending substance here.

    Grapes and Raisins:
These foods toxicity has mainly been found in dogs, in quantities of varying amounts. The ASPCA advises: "As there are still many unknowns with the toxic potential of grapes and raisins, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center advises not giving grapes or raisins to pets in any amount."

    Milk:
Although milk is not toxic to cats, it may have adverse effects. Simply put, adult cats fed a nutritious diet don't need milk, and many cats are lactose-intolerant, which means that the lactose in milk and milk products produces stomach upset, cramps, and gassiness. If your cat loves milk, and begs for it, a small amount of cream may be okay, two or three times a week. (The more fat in the milk, the less lactose.)
